Brood War)

Over the hill at 24: persistent age-related cognitive-motor decline in reaction times in an ecologically valid video game task begins in early adulthood
- PloS one
- Published about 6 years ago
Typically studies of the effects of aging on cognitive-motor performance emphasize changes in elderly populations. Although some research is directly concerned with when age-related decline actually begins, studies are often based on relatively simple reaction time tasks, making it impossible to gauge the impact of experience in compensating for this decline in a real world task. The present study investigates age-related changes in cognitive motor performance through adolescence and adulthood in a complex real world task, the real-time strategy video game StarCraft 2. In this paper we analyze the influence of age on performance using a dataset of 3,305 players, aged 16-44, collected by Thompson, Blair, Chen & Henrey . Using a piecewise regression analysis, we find that age-related slowing of within-game, self-initiated response times begins at 24 years of age. We find no evidence for the common belief expertise should attenuate domain-specific cognitive decline. Domain-specific response time declines appear to persist regardless of skill level. A second analysis of dual-task performance finds no evidence of a corresponding age-related decline. Finally, an exploratory analyses of other age-related differences suggests that older participants may have been compensating for a loss in response speed through the use of game mechanics that reduce cognitive load.
Occurrence of Norovirus Infections in Asymptomatic Food Handlers in South Korea.
- Journal of clinical microbiology
- Published over 7 years ago
Prevalence of asymptomatic norovirus infection was investigated in food handlers in Korea. Among 6,441 subjects, 66 (1.02%) had norovirus infections confirmed by RT-PCR (real-time and nested). GII-.12 and GII-4 were the prevalent genotypes. Our data suggest that infection of asymptomatic food handlers is an important transmission source in norovirus outbreaks.
Reproductive Hazards Still Persist in the Microelectronics Industry: Increased Risk of Spontaneous Abortion and Menstrual Aberration among Female Workers in the Microelectronics Industry in South Korea
- PloS one
- Published about 5 years ago
Despite the global expansion of supply chains and changes to the production process, few studies since the mid-1990s and 2000s have examined reproductive risks of the microelectronics industry; we examined the reproductive risks among female microelectronics workers in South Korea.
PBDEs and their structural analogues in marine environments: Fate and expected formation mechanisms compared with diverse environments
- Journal of hazardous materials
- Published over 2 years ago
The concentrations and relative distributions of 27 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and 17 methoxylated (MeO-) and 8 hydroxylated (OH-) BDEs were determined in marine environments including sediments, bivalves, and seawater along the southern coast of South Korea to understand their fates and possible formation mechanisms. The relative and substituent distributions of the PBDEs and their structural analogues varied according to the characteristics of the media. PBDEs were dominant in marine sediments and seawater, whereas MeO-BDEs made the highest contributions in bivalves. Similar patterns were previously identified in inland environments in Korea, except in river water where OH-BDEs were dominant. The natural formation of structural analogues might be the main mechanism in marine, as ortho-substituted naturally occurring MeO- and OH-BDEs were dominant in all media and seemed to be more produced than in inland environments. In addition, the higher concentrations of meta-substituted MeO-BDEs nearshore than offshore was observed. This is the first study comparing marine (near- and offshore) and inland to understand the differences in their fate and possible formation mechanisms in each environmental conditions.
Using Video Game Telemetry Data to Research Motor Chunking, Action Latencies, and Complex Cognitive-Motor Skill Learning
- Topics in cognitive science
- Published about 3 years ago
Many theories of complex cognitive-motor skill learning are built on the notion that basic cognitive processes group actions into easy-to-perform sequences. The present work examines predictions derived from laboratory-based studies of motor chunking and motor preparation using data collected from the real-time strategy video game StarCraft 2. We examined 996,163 action sequences in the telemetry data of 3,317 players across seven levels of skill. As predicted, the latency to the first action (thought to be the beginning of a chunked sequence) is delayed relative to the other actions in the group. Other predictions, inspired by the memory drum theory of Henry and Rogers, received only weak support.
Role-Playing and Real-Time Strategy Games Associated with Greater Probability of Internet Gaming Disorder
- Cyberpsychology, behavior and social networking
- Published over 4 years ago
Research indicates that a small subset of those who routinely play video games show signs of pathological habits, with side effects ranging from mild (e.g., being late) to quite severe (e.g., losing a job). However, it is still not clear whether individual types, or genres, of games are most strongly associated with Internet gaming disorder (IGD). A sample of 4,744 University of Wisconsin-Madison undergraduates (Mage=18.9 years; SD=1.9 years; 60.5% female) completed questionnaires on general video game playing habits and on symptoms of IGD. Consistent with previous reports: 5.9-10.8% (depending on classification criteria) of individuals who played video games show signs of pathological play. Furthermore, real-time strategy and role-playing video games were more strongly associated with pathological play, compared with action and other games (e.g., phone games). The current investigation adds support to the idea that not all video games are equal. Instead, certain genres of video games, specifically real-time strategy and role-playing/fantasy games, are disproportionately associated with IGD symptoms.
In-depth investigation for prescribing trends of benzodiazepines in South Korea
- International journal of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics
- Published about 6 years ago
This study aimed to investigate national prescription trends of benzodiazepines (BZD) for adults between 2007 and 2011 using Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) database in South Korea. Data analysis was performed by claim unit or patient unit. For the analysis of patient unit, each claim was merged by the same patient. Defined daily dose (DDD) was used to analyze the data in terms of dose and periods of BZD prescription. We identified a total of 22,361,449 adult patients who had BZD prescription at least once in 1,989,263 claims during 5 years. The average national BZD prescription prevalence for 1 year was 23.7%, 7.9%, 4.7%, and 3.2% of ≥ 1 day supply, ≥ 30 days supply, ≥ 90 days supply, and ≥ 180 days supply, respectively. The trends for 5 years were very similar. Among study population, 87.7% visited only non-psychiatric departments and the most frequent indication was gastrointestinal related diseases. BZD consumption expressed as DDDs per 1,000 inhabitants per day was 109.2. BZD consumption tended to be
4 × higher in elderly than that of non-elderly (268.6 vs. 60.0 in male and 367.7 vs. 90.9 in female). Our study indicated the possibilities for inappropriate prescription of BZD, and the limitation policy on continuous prescription over 30 days supply did not seem to be effective. The effective interventions including an educational program for appropriate prescription of BZD should be considered.
Outbreak | Campaign — Colonist missions SC II: WoL Guide
- Cleanse the infestation (destroy 144 infected buildings)
- Kill the Infestors (2)
The doctor Hanson plot, who already feels at home on the Hyperion, continues. She once again asks Raynor for help, this time regarding the refugees moved to planet Meinhoff. Apparently a mysterious virus which is even infecting buildings has attacked them. Our hero already knows that it’s a Zerg infection.
After landing on Meinhoff, you will be surrounded by infected refugee camps and in fact themselves, as they underwent a terrible mutation. During the day they’re hiding from the devastating ultraviolet light and hunt during the night. That’s why you have to act differently depending on the daytime. During daylight, you can freely destroy the infected buildings [#1], as there’s nothing to disturb you, apart from some small creatures and a bunch of blood suckers. The situation chances dramatically after sunset. A horde of Terrans comes out of the ground and you better stay inside your base, behind a wall of bunkers [#2].
You have two pathways to seal, but during the third night the mutants will break through the barricaded southern path . Thereby you should bunker it in advance [#3]. I’d suggest sending Firebats to the most exposed bunkers, as the basic type of infected Terrans prefers direct fights. However don’t forget about Marines, as they’re strong against Abominations, massive Zerg units (they will appear during the third night) and have quite a good range. You will also have the quick but not very powerful Hellions at your disposal for the first time. Swann will send them, together with a factory, at the beginning of the mission. Also note the observation Turret — thanks to it you will learn about the enemy attacks in advance thanks to it.
That’s in fact everything as far as preparations go. Raid the structures during the day and defend in the base at night. Only one additional mission (and one achievement) can make you go out after sunset, which will activate during the second night. That’s when the scanners will sniff out two peculiar Zerg types . If you intend to hunt them down — as Horner suggests — I’d suggest going to the indicated area during daytime and waiting till sunset. After eliminating the creature [#4], you’d better quickly return to base.
According to my observations, the number and power of the attackers isn’t influenced by how many structures you’ve destroyed. That’s why even if you have just a couple structures left, you have to be ready for a strong attack. Horner will make destroying the structures easier by marking them on the map.
